FID has been organizing a book club among women since February 2008 in order to provide an intellectual environment for women. Discussing books from a wide spectrum, women of different cultures find the opportunity to express their thoughts on different subjects as well as getting the insights of each other. Among the books read so far are "Straight is the Gate" by Andre Gide, "A Confession" by Leo Tolstoy and "The Seeker" by Sudhir Kakar. The participants are going to explore recently Nobel Priced author Orhan Pamuk's famous book "My Name is Red" for the upcoming gathering. A participant's comment "What's most exciting about this book club are the discussions we've had about each book. Since we come from diverse backgrounds, different countries, and are of assorted ages, we each bring a unique viewpoint to our reading. Sharing those perspectives with each other is something of a challenge, as we sometimes struggle with language, and often laugh over a misunderstanding. I feel I am greatly enriched by knowing these intelligent, well-educated women. Developing an appreciation of another faith and another culture gives me an opportunity to examine my own in a new light. "
The next book club meeting will be held on February 28 Sunday, at 1pm at FID Center. The book for February is The
Alchemist.
Light snacks & refreshments will be available.
