Biography:
Rabbi Andrew Straus from Temple Emanuel of Tempe is known with his experience and enthusiasm in his community. Raised as a member of a liberal, Conservative congregation in Poughkeepsie, NY, Rabbi Straus gained an understanding of and an appreciation for traditional and contemporary Judaism - two forces he believes must be blended for Judaism to flourish.
Rabbi Straus is a 1982 graduate of Brandeis University and received his Rabbinic Ordination in 1987 from Hebrew Union College - Jewish Institute of Religion in Cincinnati, OH. He served as the Rabbi/Educator of Peninsula Temple Sholom in Burlingame, CA from 1991 until he joined Temple Emanuel in July of 1998. He was the Associate Rabbi at the Temple Beth Sholom in New City, NY for four years before joining Peninsula Temple Sholom.
Rabbi Straus stresses Jewish education for both young and old (in formal and informal settings). He has set a personal goal of increasing each congregant's understanding, love and involvement in Judaism. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Foundation for Inter-Cultural Dialogue Seminar Series 08/09
